On this recording, Lussier's trio (which also includes bassist Vincent Charbonnier and drummer André Arpino) interprets three of the six Brandenburg Concertos that Johann Sebastian Bach (b. 1685, d. 1750) composed between 1708 and 1720, and interpretation is certainly the crucial word. Unlike musicians who perform exclusively Euroclassical music, Lussier does not play Bach's material note for note; he improvises, offering personal and introspective performances. Lussier has excellent taste, and he makes Bach's compositions sound completely natural in a jazz way. Bach: The Brandenburgs is not recommended for classical purists; it is an album for jazz piano lovers who also appreciate Bach's legacy, and those who fit that description will find Bach: The Brandenburgs one of Lussier's most successful and artistically accomplished offerings.
