GREEN LUNG are an iconic band in every sense of the word. Formed in London in 2017, their first two albums Woodland Rites (2019) and Black Harvest (2021) brought a folk-horror feel to occult rock, attracted a multitude of fans in their native UK and beyond, and led to international tours with Clutch, festival appearances from Roadburn to Bloodstock to Download, and a deal with the world's largest independent heavy metal label, Nuclear Blast Records.
Now, two years after the release of the critically acclaimed album Black Harvest, the band have unveiled their most ambitious creation to date. This Heathen Land is the most comprehensive realisation of the band's vision to date, embodying their long-held goal, in the words of vocalist Tom Templar, to "create the ultimate folk horror film soundtrack in our heads".
On This Heathen Land, the band have created their own sound and identity, while retaining the sabbatic heaviness and compelling songcraft that made their previous albums such a favourite in the metal underground. From the artwork to the record liner notes and lyrical themes, This Heathen Land is a carefully crafted and executed heavy metal love letter to the UK folk landscape.
"Perhaps unsurprisingly, I've had the classic Reader's Digest book Folklore, Myths and Legends of Britain in front of my bed since I was a kid," says Templar. "With this album, I wanted to evoke the experience of reading that book in sound form - to take listeners on a journey into the strange world of British folklore, into the forests, over the mountains and onto the moors, and inspire them to see the magic that still exists if you use a little imagination."
