Deep Purple's third studio album, the eponymous ‘Deep Purple’, signalled the end of an underappreciated era of the first line-up collective. Vocalist Rod Evans and bassist Nick Simper were dismissed and replaced by a screaming Ian Gillan and a confident Roger Glover. Although this new line-up has many more popular albums and stand-alone compositions, this version is many orders of magnitude superior to the other line-ups in terms of being able to keep a steady rhythm as well as the rhythmic backing vocals.
This album was their first major work with original material. Containing only one cover, this time of Donovan's ‘Lalena’, their music became slightly repetitive, but each band starts with new material.
