The first album, 1999's First Love, broke all records and remains the Japanese band's best-selling album in Japan. In the decades since then, they have explored different avenues of dance-pop, gone on a multi-year hiatus, given birth to a son, and written songs about grief after the death of their mother. Despite all of this, their latest album BADモード (‘BAD MODE’) is another reimagining filled with experience and reflection. Having largely abandoned the live instrumentation of their last two records in favour of electronics and softer pop, they favour an atmosphere of smartened, down-to-earth warmth. Its most revitalising force is elusive: the knowledge that ageing is a continual evolution and crystallisation of the self. Utada, who has been the undisputed queen of J-pop for over 20 years, is still aware of herself, and BADモード's depictions of love and reality, imbued with easily recognisable emotions, read like a gentle reminder from a friend that we always come back to ourselves.
