After the very poor reception of the English Boy Wonders album, Big Big Train was at a crossroads: its members were at an impasse both in their musical career and in their personal lives. With no record deal or budget, the band - if it could even be called a band at this point - was on its way to becoming nothing more than a hobby.
It was decided to combine all the remaining ideas for a farewell recording of the last album, which eventually became Bard. Since being self-released in 2002, Bard has achieved almost legendary status due to its rarity: it has only been released on one compact disc of 1,000 copies and has never been officially distributed via digital platforms.
