The album Cat by Japanese trombonist Hiroshi Suzuki is one of those rare jazz-funk releases from the 1970s that has gained cult status over the years. Released on the Columbia Japan label in 1976, it remained little known even among jazz collectors for a long time, but thanks to reissues and the digital era, it has become a real hidden gem for groove music lovers.
The music on the album balances between soul jazz, funk and fusion with the characteristic warm sound of Japanese jazz of that period. Suzuki's trombone sounds unhurried, dense and smooth, creating a deep evening club atmosphere. The compositions are strongly influenced by American masters (Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard), but the presentation has Japanese sophistication and melodiousness.
