A brilliant musician playing acoustic and electric bass, Stanley Clarke has spent most of his career outside jazz, although he has the ability to play jazz with the best of the genre. He played accordion in his youth, switching to violin and cello before taking up bass. He worked with R&B and rock bands in high school, but after moving to New York he started working with Pharoah Sanders in the early 70s. Other early gigs were with Gil Evans, Mel Lewis, Horace Silver, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey and all were impressed with his talents.
