The debut album by Boston trio Morphine was a real breakthrough in the alternative scene of the early 90s. When grunge and heavy guitar rock reigned supreme, Mark Sandman's band offered a completely different recipe: a two-string bass, saxophone and drums — without a single guitar. This is how their signature style was born, which the musicians themselves jokingly called ‘low rock’.
Good sounds raw, but already demonstrates all the features of Morphine's future recognisable aesthetic: Sandman's deep, almost hypnotic voice, Danny Collie's predatory baritone saxophone, and Jerome Dupree's minimalist rhythm section. The atmosphere of the album balances between jazz noir, blues and punk energy, creating the feeling of a night city with its secrets and temptations.
