Their sixth LP Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino has caused controversy, especially among those fans who were expecting another rock ‘n’ roll stomp in the vein of 2013‘s “AM” (although one only has to listen to The Last Shadow Puppets’ underrated 2016 release Everything You've Come to Expect to realise what sonic direction Turner's work is taking). So there's an air of anticipation in the atmosphere - can Arctic Monkeys' new material match their impressive back catalogue on stage?
When Turner appeared on stage, dressed in a Partridge-esque safari suit and slouching, to perform ‘Four out of Five’, it was an amusing sight - and hardly a classic opening act in the vein of ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ or ‘Brianstorm’ - but it laid the groundwork for what followed. The Tranquility Base album was clearly not written for such occasions, but Turner made sure to make songs like ‘One Point Perspective’ work by honing them and getting into character, and by the time it's over you'll wish they'd done a few more songs like that.
