"It's hard to remain indifferent to Dakh Daughters. You can dislike them because of the literary nature of their lyrics, the frank patchwork of their songs and the polyphony, in which it is sometimes difficult to discern the drama of a single character. At the same time, it is impossible to deny them that they not only occupy their own theatrical and musical niche, but also rule it without question and feel confident and free there. On 12 February, these seven girls released a new album called Make Up.
This time, the album is not just a collection of songs, but also a soundtrack to a play of the same name. In the story, all the band members tell their stories and only then apply their signature make-up to their faces, thus adding an element of intimacy to the whole performance. Such existence on the border of music and theatre has been inherent in Dakh Daughters from the very beginning, and here the audience is divided on the question: is it a bug or a feature? At the beginning of their career, DD's songs sometimes resembled a mere collection of musical exercises based on various literary curiosities, like their first hit "Rozy/Donbass". But at the time of the third release, we can already say that this negative effect has been smoothed out over time and the tracks have become really full-fledged songs with a clearly distinguishable narrative, although the writing principle has remained practically unchanged."
