Paris 1919 was released in 1973 and was Cale's fourth solo release after his departure from the Velvet Underground. Cale's songs on Paris 1919 are extremely literary numbers full of political intrigue and dubious characters, centred around the Versailles Conference mentioned in the album's title. The album was recorded with Lowell George and Richie Hayward of the Los Angeles-based southern rock band Little Feat and the UCLA Symphony Orchestra. Pitchfork called ‘Paris 1919’ ‘the most open and simply the most beautiful record of Cale's multi-faceted career.’
