Khan was formed in London by guitarist and vocalist Steve Hillage, who had previously taken his first musical steps in the group Uriel between 1967 and 1968. However, in August 1968 he left the band to study at the University of Kent in Canterbury. Yes, it was in Canterbury, where he had the opportunity to get acquainted with the local music scene and local bands (Caravan, Soft Machine and Spirogyra), which had a huge and considerable influence on his work. In June 1969, he temporary assisted to his colleagues from Uriel to record the only one album with them as Arzachel, and under this name was released in July 1969.
The actual story began in April 1971, when Hillage formed the aforementioned Khan. The formation became associated with the Decca label, which, unfortunately, the label later perfidiously contributed to the destruction of this promising group... It consisted except Hillage of former musicians of the Crazy World Of Arthur Brown - bassist and vocalist Nick Greenwood and keyboardist Dick Heninghem. Drummer was Pip Pyle (ex-Delivery, Chicken Shack), who did not play long, however - he left to Gong. He was replaced by Eric Peachey (ex-Doctor K’s Blues Band). Sadly, this was not the end of personnel changes. In October 1971, Henninghem left, just as the deadline for a recording session was approaching. Since there was no more time to look for a successor, Hillage convinced an old acquaintance from the Uriel/Arzachel days, Egg musician Dave Stewart, to assist the group, both in concert and session.
