Swordfishtrombones is an album that completely changed the course of Tom Waits' career. Whereas his music had previously been steeped in night bars, jazz orchestras and cigarette blues, here he takes a sharp turn towards avant-rock, expressionism and whimsical theatricality. Waits abandons sophisticated arrangements and orchestras, opting instead for homemade percussion, tubas, marimbas, noise instruments and harsh, raspy vocals that now sound more like a character from a David Lynch film than a classic bard with a piano.
