Stylistically, We Love Life takes cues from its predecessors but has its own distinctive identity. This is refined indie/art pop with a focus on literate lyrics, without the glammy overtones of This Is Hardcore and with little of the anthemic exuberance that punctuated His 'n' Hers or Different Class. There are shades of the fading Britpop movement in the guitar arrangements, but this record is only Britpop insofar that it may recall earlier Pulp releases. The fact that Scott Walker was brought in as producer/multi-instrumentalist should give you a pretty good idea of how the record differs from This Is Hardcore, even if Walker's presence is only specifically discernible via the widespread usage of a full string orchestra. The one thing that hasn't fundamentally changed on We Love Life are Jarvis Cocker's vocal melodies.
