When Dogg Food hit the shelves in the autumn of 1995, the Death Row Records label was at the height of its power. After Dr. Dre's The Chronic and Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle, everyone expected something equally sensational from the younger members of the label — Tha Dogg Pound (the duo of Daz Dillinger and Kurupt). And they did not disappoint. Dogg Food was hard-hitting, uncompromising and, at the same time, surprisingly melodic — typical of the West Coast sound of the mid-90s, where gritty street lyrics intertwine with warm synths and deep G-funk bass.
