Katya Chilly’s album *Rusalki in da House* is finally being released on vinyl — a legendary release from the Ukrainian independent scene, which many have until now only heard via cassette bootlegs and fan downloads. Now this music, which for decades has lived on as a cult ‘secret artefact’, is receiving a fitting physical embodiment on vinyl.
A legend of the Ukrainian independent scene, “Rusalka in da House” is Katya Chilly’s debut album, recorded in the mid-90s and first released in 1998 on cassette by Zone Records. The album’s tracks are rooted in Ukrainian folklore and ritual singing, but presented through the prism of the electronic music of the time, which at the time seemed an incredibly bold experiment. It was following the release of this album that the media began to refer to Katya as a ‘mermaid’ and a ‘Ukrainian elf’ — such was the uniqueness of her voice and stage persona.
Critics and researchers have repeatedly cited ‘Rusalka in da House’ as the starting point for Ukrainian folk-electronica — a scene where authentic singing is combined with electronic music, ambient and trip-hop. In the 90s, this album sounded like a message from the future, setting the direction for a whole wave of musicians who later began to boldly blend ethnographic material with contemporary electronic aesthetics.
