It’s fascinating how we’ve all come to share this almost universal image of what black metal should sound like — corpse paint, dissonant riffs, and vocals that seem to have emerged straight from the abyss. The genre has long been associated with the embodiment of pure, metallic evil. Yet, in recent years, black metal has undergone a notable transformation. Bands have begun to incorporate elements of shoegaze and ambient soundscapes, turning the music into something more immersive — less focused on aggression and more on atmosphere. Unrequited fully embraces this approach on their latest release, Mosaic I: L’amour et l’ardeur.

Hailing from Canada, Unreqvited brings a distinctive post-rock sensibility to their form of black metal. Their compositions unfold more like Baroque pieces than traditional metal tracks. Forget the predictable intro-verse-chorus structure — here, the music moves organically, with each note and crescendo carefully placed and emotionally deliberate. The instruments don’t compete; they blend into a single, shifting voice that guides the listener through waves of emotion across the album’s landscape.

Although the band labels their style as depressive black metal, there’s a duality at play. Melancholy ebbs and flows, giving way to moments that feel almost hopeful. The sorrow arises not solely from darkness but from the lack of resolution — from the emotional longing that never fully finds closure. It’s a musical portrayal of yearning, of almost reaching catharsis but never quite attaining it.

Take the opening track, “Sunrise.” It begins with the gentle hum of nature and a slowly forming swirl of synths, soon joined by delicate piano chords. Strings emerge, carrying a brightness that feels uplifting. The sound builds and builds — layers of guitars and drums creating a powerful crescendo — until, suddenly, it all drops away. The music drifts into a quiet, chiming guitar, leaving only the echo of what was. That abrupt silence is haunting — like realising something beautiful has vanished before you were ready to let it go.

The following track, “Dreamscape,” continues that sense of absence. It’s not overtly sad or despairing, but there’s a subtle unease beneath its melody — as though something vital is missing. Listening to it feels like witnessing a tragedy unfold in slow motion: a moment of sacrifice, of love and loss intertwined. It’s cinematic in its sorrow, yet profoundly human in its emotion.

Albums like Mosaic I: L’amour et l’ardeur are more than just collections of songs; they’re cohesive works of art. You wouldn’t dissect an impressionist painting — each stroke gains meaning only within the whole. This record is no different. The title, translated as “love and passion,” perfectly captures its essence. Love evokes feeling; passion amplifies it. Every note on this album is charged with that intensity, that emotional drive.

This isn’t an album you simply hear — it’s one you feel. Take the time to sit down with good headphones, close your eyes, and let Unrequited’s soundscape wash over you. It’s an experience well worth surrendering to.
