Debut Album From Canterbury Pioneers. Original 1968 Artwork.
Music was in such a state of flux at the end of the 60's that it would not have seemed inconceivable for a band like the Soft Machine to have taken its place in the mainstream. Albums were the established currency, pop and rock seemed almost indistinguishable and artistic creativity was in the ascendency.
In hind-sight, of course, the Softs eclectic diversity couldn't help but drive them underground, along with every other band that couldn't concentrate their forces in the right direction, something for which we must be eternally grateful! Pop music marched on shadowed closely by mainstream rock, together they ruled the world possibly unaware that anything really worthwhile had gravitated to a parallel universe.
This may be how a young fan of the Softs would have seen it at the time, after all, how many bands tried to cut it as a three-piece without a guitarist and with a falsetto vocalist behind the drumkit, a band that might not even be taking themselves too seriously? Soft Machine were just such a band who overcame these apparant short-comings by combining high levels of musicianship with startling originality.
