The Woods Band consisted of Terry Woods (vocals, mandola, concertina, electric, acoustic and bass guitar), Gay Woods (vocals, concertina, autoharp, dulcimer, bodhran), Ed Dean (electric, acoustic and bass guitars, keyboards) and Pat Nash (drums and vocals). Married couple Terry and Gaye Woods were members of the first Steeleye Span line-up (which also included ex-Fairport Convention member Ashley Hutchings, Tim Hart and Maddie Prior). Woods left the group shortly after the release of their debut album to form their own band.
After working with various musicians (including former King Crimson members Mike Giles and Ian McDonald), the Woods Band finally found a stable line-up when they were joined by Ed Dean and Pat Nash. In 1971, the Woods Band signed with the newly formed Greenwich Gramophone Company (a ‘progressive’ imprint of songwriter Les Reed's Chapter 1 Records label) and recorded their only album at Morgan Studios in September of that year.
However, in 1972 Greenwich Gramophone ceased operations, leaving the band without a recording contract, and the Woods Band disbanded, leaving Terry and Gaye Woods to continue recording and working as a duo. Terry Woods subsequently became a member of The Pogues.
