In many ways, it's hard to overstate the impact of Hüsker Dü's Zen Arcade album on the American rock underground of the ‘80s. It's a record that broke the boundaries of hardcore and what it could achieve. With ‘Zen Arcade,’ Hüsker Dü broke all the rules. First of all, this is a sweeping concept album, even if the concept is not immediately clear and understandable. Much more important are the songs themselves. Both Bob Mould and Grant Hart abandoned the strict rules of hardcore punk ‘fast, hard, loud’ when composing their songs for Zen Arcade.
