By 2004, Mayhem’s artistic vision was struggling to play tug-of-war with itself. Given the band’s mainstream notoriety (‘mainstream’ is generous here, I know), there is a level of refinement on Chimera that you simply don’t hear in many other black metal albums. But for the pioneers of such an esoteric and mysterious type of black metal, they sure do their best to balance the quality recording with a demonic atmosphere and cagey aggression in the songwriting.
